If you are hoping to elope in California, then I’m SO EXCITED for you! California has so many places that make for perfect elopement locations.
Whether you’re looking for something
outdoor and remote,
adventurous and epic,
beautiful and intimate,
there’s something for every bride in the golden state.
As a destination wedding & elopement photographer, I’ve seen the best places to elope in California. I’m here to help you find your dream place to tie the knot!
Known for its astonishing mountains and peaks, Yosemite is the perfect place for an adventurous couple to have a remote, private elopement. Yosemite is a massive park, so here are a few of the specific places I’d recommend eloping in Yosemite depending on what you’re looking for ;

If boho, desert vibes are the style you’re going for with your elopement, then check out Joshua Tree National Park! Joshua Tree has several unique backdrops for ceremonies, including the Cholla Cactus Garden, Jumbo Rocks, or on Queen Valley Road. Big Sur is a stunning region of oceanfront cliffs just south of Monterey, California. Many people elope in Big Sur for it’s amazing views and temperate weather. Some of the most popular spots to elope are at Limekiln State Park, and Pfeiffer Beach known for its keyhole rock formation. Both of these locations do not require a permit for weddings.
If you want a location in Big Sur that will be more private than the public parks, check out Glen Oaks or Ragged Point Inn, two locations that are perfect for small, intimate weddings and offer amazing, private views for your elopement.
Of all the places to elope in California, this one is extra special to me! San Diego is home to the amazing Sunset Cliffs with incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. Couples have intimate elopements and small weddings here for the incredible views, the sound of the crashing waves, and the incredible sunsets. However, permits for elopements at Sunset Cliffs are required.
If your dream is to get married in the most incredible forest, then Sequoia National Park is the place for you. Filled with giant, record-height sequoia trees, this is the perfect forest wonderland for any elopement. For more information on wedding permits, click here.
Another less busy but equally beautiful option if you’re looking for a forest elopement, is Muir Woods located just outside of San Francisco and filled with the world’s tallest redwood trees. To learn more about Muir, click here.
The countless romantic vineyards across the state also make for amazing places to elope in California. Here are some of my favorite vineyards for small weddings and elopements in Cali;
Because vineyards are private properties, you will need to contact a vineyard directly about eloping there.
